There's a 6 foot easement on that side to the fence, so the building wall will be reasonably close to the fence. OTOH, the north side where it will actually go did have the advantage that it could be closer to the "effective" line because the actual property line is about 7 feet into the neighboring property because of what had to be done when subdividing it years ago. It would be "logistically" and visually a lot better if it was on the south side rather than the north side but because of the required 15' side setback, a very large and mature willow tree would have to be destroyed. SWMBO is to not have the structure require removing any live trees. Positioning my own building has been an exercise because a "prime directive" for both myself and Professor Dr. Every property has its upsides and downsides. I'm sure that what you put up will meet the immediate need and you've mentioned that you do have a plan to move on in a few years to larger quarters. No way that would pass code now, but it's been there for 100 years and is still pretty straight. The funny thing i that the house is also 16 feet wide and has rough cut 2x4 rafters on 16" centers and a 12/12 pitch. If anyone knows of a rafter span table that goes up as high as 90# I would be very grateful to hear of it. See Rafter Run to Outer Wall Calculator below. eg: Half building width minus 1/2 ridge thickness. ![]() It seems to me on a back of the envelope basis that full size 2x10 should be about right, but I am not an engineer. Allow for Ridge Thickness when determining Rafter Run to Outer Wall. I think there is some extra strength in the full size rafters, too. It looks on the 70# chart like that would be okay, but I would need to go bigger for 90# presumably. They will be at 6/12 pitch, 24" centers and the span will be 8'9". The tool will calculate the missing field. I had specified full size rough cut 2x8 rafters on 24" centers. To use the Truss Form Existing Roof Dimension Calculator: Enter your existing heel size OR rafter size Enter two of the Span/Height/Pitch fields. I would be happy to use whatever size rafters she told me to, but since neither of us knows what is sufficient I seem to be stuck unless I hire a structural engineer, which I would rather avoid if possible. The one difference is that we need to calculate the roof rise using the pitch first. Calculate the length of a rafter from the roof slope ratio of inches per foot and a building width measurement. The inspector also doesn't seem to know what size rafters are wanted. For calculations based on the roof pitch: The formula used to calculate rafter length from roof pitch is, in fact, the same as the one above. ![]() I can find rafter span charts for up to 70 psf, but nothing higher. The building inspector says that the roof must be designed for a 90 pound snow load. So it is suited for use when you’re in the office, at college or on site.I have run into an obstacle in getting my workshop design approved. This calculator will work on desktop, tablet and mobile devices be they iPhone or Android. ![]() ![]() The RoofJacker Ready Reckoner (v1.484) on this page is designed to be a responsive web app. With just three measurements, you will be able to use this online Ready Reckoner and calculate the following roofing dimensions Rise per metre Run, Rafter Length, Hip Length, Jacks Diminish, Common Rafter Seat Bevel, Common Rafter Ridge Bevel, Hip or Valley Seat, Hip or Valley Ridge, Jack Rafter Edge and Purlin Edge. These are used to calculate the various angles and measurements required when building a roof. Calculate the length of common rafters with this free and easy online tool by entering a dimension for the roof width, selecting a pitch for the roof, and the thickness of the ridge. This roofing calculator will work on any device with web access and is designed to replace the unwieldy hard copy look-up tables that are also known as the Roofing Carpenter’s Ready Reckoners. This online Roofing Ready Reckoner app, is a custom coded trigonometrical calculator. This in turn became a single page web app, which allows you to enter just 3 measurements and calculate all the dimensions you need to construct a roof. Working together with my son in March 2011, the result was a spreadsheet that he soon coded into HTML. Birds-mouth Rafter calculator dimension diagram Remember to allow for Ridge Thickness in Rafter Run to Outer Wall. I felt that it was surely time for a change, from the old and outdated ready reckoner table. Rafter calculator angle dimension diagram Use SHIFT + or Cursor Keys to scale Birds-mouth. While teaching at my local technical college, I realised that the popular book of Roofing Ready Reckoner look-up tables had been in use for decades. Online web app for calculating roofing dimensions
